The Department of Plant Sciences has been instrumental in building capacity for better agriculture, provision of services, development and release of improved crop varieties and technologies since its establishment in 1971. Major goals of the department include:
- Generation and adaptation of crop technologies to increase agricultural productivity and diversify production
- Development of low-cost sustainable farming systems for all major agro-ecological regions and farm sizes through participation of both the public and private sectors in research
- Breeding for stable and high yielding varieties of both food and cash crops
- Breeding for resistance to both biotic and abiotic stresses
