Welcome to the Department of Historical and Archaeological Studies. The Department of Historical and Archaeological Studies is in the School of Humanities and Social Science. Its history section has been in existence since the University of Zambia was established in 1966, but it was not until 2005 that the archaeological section was added to the Department. The significance of studying of history or the past and archaeology cannot be overemphasised. Through exploring mankind’s past economic, social, political and cultural activities, achievements and failures, history and archaeology enables students to come to terms with the present, to appreciate its challenges and thus to be able shape the future. Critical studying of both disciplines equips students with useful analytical, interpretive and writing skills essential to carrying out research and documenting the past.
