Message From The Dean

Welcome to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zambia. As part of the University of Zambia, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences embraces the University’s motto of “service and excellence”. We do this through education, research and community service. Our mission is to provide a world-class educational experience for our students and to conduct high quality research in the humanities and social sciences that advances national development. Our academic programmes from undergraduate to Doctoral level are fully accredited by the Higher Education Authority and are recognized worldwide.
 
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the thirteen Schools in the University. Established in March 1966, the School has been offering degree programmes in various disciplines. The physical location of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences is on the great east road campus of the University of Zambia. The office of the Dean of the School is located in the building near the main University library and Central Administration building. The School has eleven departments, namely: Development Studies, Economics, Gender Studies, Government and Management StudiesHistorical and Archaeological Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Literature and Languages, Philosophy and Applied Ethics, Demography, Population Sciences, Monitoring and Evaluation, Psychology, and Sociology and Social Work.
 
The School offers four-year programmes leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (specialising in any one of the programmes as listed below), Bachelor of Mass Communication and Bachelor of Social Work. Further, the School offers Masters and Doctor of Philosophy programmes in various disciplines. The Bachelor of Arts programmes are offered at regular, distance learning and parallel mode of study. Further, the School also runs professional programmes at Diploma Bachelors, Masters and doctoral levels. These programmes include, the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), the Master of Arts in Defence and Security Studies (MADSS), Master of Arts in Economic Policy Management, the Master of Arts in Communication for Development (MCD), Diploma in Defence and Security Studies and the Diploma in Intelligence and Security Studies. In addition, the School also offers tailor-made short courses in Monitoring and Evaluation on a regular basis.
