Welcome to the Department of Genders Studies. The Department of Gender Studies was opened on 4th October, 1994 to offer high quality training and research in Gender Studies. The Department started by offering graduate studies and later in 2009 rolled out the undergraduate programmes. The field of Gender Studies at the University of Zambia provides students and other trainees an excellent opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the roles played by women and men in society and national development.
The Gender Studies programme at the University of Zambia offers courses that provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills of gender equality in society including at the workplace, community and family level. This Degree programme was designed to develop and promote attitudes and values for promoting gender equality in society. Our undergraduate programme is the Bachelors of Arts Degree in Gender Studies. Students majoring in Gender Studies take a minor subject in any programme within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The undergraduate programme is a four year programme. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers the Master of Arts in Gender Studies (2 year programme, by coursework and dissertation) and the PhD in Gender Studies (by thesis).
