ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Welcome to the School of public Health Department of Health Promotion and Education. The Department of Health Promotion and Education is an interdisciplinary unit consisting of students from both social and natural sciences. The department operated as a Unit under the School of Medicine since 2013 and was later recognised as a department in 2017 under the newly established School of Public Health at UNZA Ridgeway Campus.

Currently, the department offers a Bachelor of Health Promotion and a Master of Public Health in Health Promotion and Education. Our programs are intended to train a cadre of professionals who will provide leadership in tackling the social determinants of health such as lifestyles and behaviours and the underlying societal factors such as cultural practices, poverty, inequalities, deprivation and discrimination, through research and practice.

The programs are designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical skills required for a career in Health Promotion and General Public Health. Students learn how to identify the health needs of individuals, groups, and communities, develop people’s skills and knowledge in health, and advocate for policies and laws that support healthy choices. Our students are exposed to Health Promotion and Education techniques that are aimed at equipping them with skills in enhancing the health of the population through use of social and behavioural sciences. Our graduates work both in Government and Non-Governmental Institutions – including International Non-Governmental Organisations.
