The School of Public Health (SoPH) is a forerunner of the Department of Public Health which was established in 1968 in the school of Medicine, University of Zambia (UNZA). As the scope of the department continued to undergo both strategic and operational reforms, it embraced a wider public health service that lead to creation of a critical sized pool of highly trained public health professionals in generic and specialized fields. The pool of staff in turn have continued to be part of key national resource base that is able to effectively combat key public health problems in Zambia.

The SoPH operates under a broad mandate of the University of Zambia Act No. 11 of 1999 which outlines the goals to; provide higher education, promote research and advancement of learning; and to disseminate knowledge and hold out to all persons, without discrimination, the opportunity of acquiring higher education. The School of Public Health while operating under this broad mandate, trains professionals in Bioethics, Environmental Health Scientists, Epidemiologists and Biostatisticians, Family Health Physicians, Health Policy and Management, Health Promotion Specialists, Health Demographers, Nutritionist and other health professionals.

A centre of excellence in influencing public health policy, disease prevention and control in Zambia, the region and internationally, in providing high quality professional training, research and consultancy services.
