In its quest to improve both the production and productivity of the dairy herd, the Department of Animal Science has embarked on a programme to modernize the dairy practices undertaken at the School of Agricultural Sciences Field Station. In addition to adopting the use of artificial insemination (AI), the Department recently bought three (3) in-calf dairy heifers that are expected to calf-down early this year. These two measures are intended to improve the dairyness of the herd over time. Furthermore, to enhance food safety and improve milk harvesting, the Department has introduced machine milking as a replacement for hand-milking. The above acquisitions will enhance both teaching and research practices carried out by staff and students.
