About the Demography Programme
Demography is an immensely challenging and exciting discipline. Most people think Demography is just mathematics in disguise – a sort of dry social accounting. Once exposed to the subject, however, many change their minds. So will you! You will come to appreciate the profound impact demographic forces have on society.
Demography studies human populations: their size, composition, and distribution, as well as the causes and consequences of changes in these factors.
Demography is also interdisciplinary as it draws its subject matter and methods from many disciplines such as Statistics, Mathematics, Sociology, Economics, Biology, Geography, History, and the Health Sciences. Demography is all about our lives: when and where we were born, our marital status, the number of children we have or will have and how far apart, our movements, how long we will live, our chances of dying and what will kill us, how many jobs we’ll have and what kind, et cetera. All these are demographic phenomena and are analysed in the aggregate and in terms of their social and economic implications. We hope you can see that if people are not interested in demographic phenomena, then they are not interested in themselves.
The undergraduate demography program is a four-year course. To major in Demography a student is required to take at least ten demography courses in a period of four years.
