In a world of competing technologies and scarce mineral resources, the mining industry continues to have an obligation to make available these resources to the world community while at the same time ensuring that our earthly resources are efficiently extracted from the ground in a sustainable way.
In order to rise to these challenges, the Mining Engineering Department in the School of Mines has continued to provide Quality Mining Engineering Graduates to the Zambian and global mining industry.
The Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering programme prepares Engineers who can apply different mining techniques to extract minerals from the earth’s crust. A Mining Engineer employs surface and underground mining methods to recover minerals from the earth’s crust. He is responsible for the overall design of various excavations in the mine including mine shafts, underground tunnels, and ventilation design. Therefore, a Mining Engineer has to be adequately trained for him/her to be able to understand all engineering and technological processes in the mine. Studies include engineering mathematics, principles of electricity, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, mechanics of materials, geology and resources estimation, computer applications, rock mechanics; surveying, surface and underground mining methods, mine design, drilling and blasting, mine ventilation and air conditioning, investment analysis, mine automation, elements of mineral processing, investment analysis; mine management and operations research, mine safety and regulations, environmental and social issues, etc.
Career opportunities for mining engineering graduates include mining engineers, planning engineers, production engineers, mining researchers, mine safety engineers, and mine inspectors, to name a few.
A mining degree from the University of Zambia will prepare you to participate in the many significant opportunities available in the global mining industry.
I therefore welcome all prospective students, academic/research collaborators, mining companies, other interested parties etc. to our department.
