The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has commended the University of Zambia (UNZA) for taking a step to form an Integrity Committee (IC) whose mandate will be to oversee and implement measures aimed at preventing corruption, ensuring transparency, promoting accountability, and addressing other forms of malfeasance within the institution.
Officially opening the induction workshop for UNZA IC members, the Anti-Corruption Commission Director General Mrs. Daphne Chabu said that the government has taken serious recognition of the importance of integrating corruption prevention strategies into the daily operations of organizations and that this proactive approach is essential for effectively addressing the root causes and symptoms of corruption.
"The establishment of the Integrity Committee by the University of Zambia is a significant stride towards fostering a culture of accountability and upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct. This committee therefore will serve as a crucial focal point for educating the university community on ethical issues, promoting good governance practices, and ensuring that all members understand their roles and responsibilities in maintaining integrity. By integrating these principles into everyday practices, the university aims to create an environment where transparency and ethical behaviour are not just encouraged but expected," she said.
And the University of Zambia Vice Chancellor, Professor Mundia Muya, called for unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability. He stressed the importance of cultivating an environment that champions the highest ethical standards, thereby bolstering the institution's credibility and reputation.
Prof. Muya further elaborated on the purpose of the training workshop, explaining that it is specifically designed to enhance the capacity of key staff members to identify, prevent, and effectively address issues pertaining to integrity and ethical conduct. He said that the skills being imparted in the IC members were important for maintaining UNZA’s position as a bastion of academic excellence and ethical leadership.
"I urge all participants to engage in this workshop with an open mind, to share their insights objectively, and to recognize that integrity is not merely an abstract concept; however, it is an ongoing commitment that demands constant vigilance, collaborative effort, and unwavering dedication. Through our collective efforts, we can cultivate an institutional culture where honesty, fairness, and accountability are the cornerstones," he said.
The workshop is aimed at equipping the members of the Integrity Committee with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively perform their roles and responsibilities as change agents in the institution’s fight against corruption. The ACC and UNZA are committed to ensuring that this initiative will lead to tangible improvements in the university's governance and ethical practices.
