The University of Zambia (UNZA), under the auspices of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, has unveiled four new Master of Science programmes, a significant leap forward in the nation's scientific capacity development.
This initiative, supported by the Zambian government through the Ministry of Technology and Science, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through the ZAM007 Project, and the European Union's Funded4Future Project, introduces Master of Science degrees in Space Science and Applications, Medical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, and Health Physics and Radiation Protection at the University's Great East Road Campus.
Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix C. Mutati, MP, who was represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Eng. Brilliant Habeenzu, officially launched the programme on Tuesday, 15 April2025.
He praised UNZA's proactive response to the escalating demand for specialised skills in science and technology, both nationally and regionally.
Mr Mutati emphasised the necessity of nurturing, not just scientists, but professionals equipped to drive tangible societal change.
The Minister highlighted the pivotal role these skills play in fostering socio-economic transformation and positioning Zambia as a science-driven, competitive nation.
Hon. Mutati's address underscored the nation's current research deficit, noting fewer than 90 researchers per million people, which is a stark contrast to the over 4,000 in developed economies.
He asserted that these new programmes represented a timely and strategic investment, designed to bridge this gap and accelerate socio-economic progress.
"Our support for these programmes is aligned with our science, technology, and innovation policy, which aims to create an enabling environment for innovation, scientific research, and human capital development in key sectors," he stated.
He further called for sustained support to ensure the programmes' success and advocated for the provision of modern laboratory equipment, online teaching platforms, scholarships, internship placements, and guest lectureships.
UNZA Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mundia Muya highlighted the University's crucial role in linking its legacy with the nation's progress.
He emphasised that the new Master of Science programmes extend beyond mere academic advancement, laying the groundwork for a new generation of professionals poised to lead in critical fields.
The Vice-Chancellor stressed the programmes' alignment with national priorities and the global scientific community's objectives.
He acknowledged the pressing global challenges, particularly in health, technology, and sustainable development, and affirmed UNZA's commitment to addressing them.
"Our motto, 'Service and Excellence,' drives us to push the boundaries of knowledge and deliver solutions that address both local and global challenges," he said.
Dean of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Dr. Orleans Mfune expressed gratitude to the funding partners for their pivotal support in making these programmes a reality.
