The Afrobarometer Round 8 survey has finally kicked off with 16 Field Research Assistants and 4 field Supervisors trained from 18th to 24th November, 2020. This was followed by a pilot test conducted in Chilanga’s Shimabala area with each Field Research Assistant carrying out two personal interviews to obtain information from individual respondents from randomly selected households. The respondents answered a series of questions in a face-too face situation and in a language of the respondent’s choice.
The survey is aimed at collecting information regarding views on democracy, governance, economic reforms, debt, corruption, social tolerance and civil society, and quality of life among other topics. Zambia is part of Afrobarometer Network of about 35 National Partners that conduct a comparative series of public attitude surveys that assess citizen attitudes to democracy and governance, markets, and civil society, among other topics. Last year in 2019, the Institute of Economic and Social Research (INESOR) won a competitive bid to conduct the Round 8 survey and will collect information from Zambia’s ten Provinces based on national probability samples whose aggregate results will be representative of the entire country. These results will feed directly into the policy process in order to inform public debate about democracy, governance, and other policy and development issues. The ultimate goal is to provide high quality public opinion data to policymakers, policy advocates, civil society organizations, academics, news media, donors and investors, and ordinary Africans and enable them to make informed decisions.
The Zambia Afrobarometer Field Research Team commenced field work on 28th November, 2020 to cover all the ten provinces of Zambia within 22 days and is led by Dr. Jolly Kamwanga as National Investigator and Mr. Edward Chibwili as the Co – National Investigator. Watch this space!!!
