Postgraduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation Methods 


The Department of Population Studies has been abreast with developments in the field of Monitoring and Evaluation. The department has identified the need to offer higher level training through a Postgraduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation Methods. This programme will be an addition to the short course and undergraduate course in Planning Monitoring and Evaluation that are already being offered by the department. The development of the Postgraduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation Methods is a duty the department aims to fulfil to the University and nation at large. Therefore, this programme will equip monitoring and evaluation practitioners with the necessary skills needed to perform their duties with precision and utmost effectiveness. This will also enable both policy and decision makers to provide direction based on detailed evidence.




Governments, public corporations and non-government organizations all engage in innovations in order to meet the demands of this new age, especially developmental demands. Social, health, educations and other interventions require programs, projects and initiatives that are designed and implemented to address these demands. These programs and all interventions need to be monitored and regulated regularly.  The aim of this programme therefore, is to provide basic knowledge of and proficiency in the methodology of monitoring and evaluation.


Objectives of this programme are to:

  1. Introduce students to the concepts of programme planning, monitoring and evaluation
  2. Introduce students to principles and paradigms of Evaluation
  3. Equip students with skills that will enable them to design M&E systems
  4. Equip students to be able to conduct practical evaluation
  5. Equip students with skills in qualitative and quantitative data analysis and reporting skills


The Postgraduate diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation methods has 7 core modules. These modules are taken in 3 block releases as follows; 

Block One

MEM 5001 -Principles and Paradigms of Evaluation CORE (2 days)

MEM 5002- Clarificative Evaluation CORE (3 days)


Block Two

MEM 5003- Process Evaluation and Program Monitoring CORE (3 days)

MEM 5004 - Data collection for evaluation research CORE (2 days)


Block Three

MEM 5005 - Data Management, Analysis and Reporting (7 days)

MEM 5114 Monitoring and Evaluation Project




The applicant must possess:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in the broad field of the social sciences or 
  2. A Bachelor’s degree in humanities, health sciences or any other undergraduate field with work experience in data related issues, Monitoring and Evaluation, planning etc.

Postgraduate Fees

Please note that:

  • Registration requires payment of fees.
  • All fees meant for the University should be paid into the UNZA Directorate Postgraduate Account OR by cheque into the same account.
  • Fees meant to cover Costs related to student welfare and research costs should be paid to the student.
  • In the event of a student withdrawing from studies, tuition and other fees may not be refunded in full.
