Biography

Academic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Minerals Engineering (Hons.) 1984, University of Birmingham, UK
  • Doctor of Philosophy, Minerals Processing 1994, Queensland University, Australia.

Worked for Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) for 14 years as a plant operator and ended up as the ZCCM Head of Group Environmental Services (1984-1998). Was appointed as a Permanent Secretary in the Zambian Government for 4 years from 1998 to 2002. Prepared the subsisting Zambian Government Mines and Minerals (Environmental) Regulations governing environmental protection in the mining sector in Zambia. Worked as a private consultant to the mining industry from 2002 to 2004. Was the Chief Executive Officer of the Tobacco Association of Zambia from 2004 to 2006, and then joined the University of Zambia as a Lecturer in Metallurgy and Mineral Processing in 2006 to date.  Currently serving as the Coordinator of the United Nations University – Institute of Natural Resources in Africa, Mineral Resources Unit, as well as Coordinator of the UNZA – Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (ESDA) Programme at the University of Zambia. Involved in postgraduate student research supervision and teaching, at MSc and PhD level. 
Areas of research interest include environmental management policy, legislation and practice, and implementation of the African Mining Vision (AMV) in Zambia. Have an active research project on the AMV in Zambia. Currently active as a consultant to the mining industry, NGOs and other organisations, in environmental management policy and practice carried out over 64 consulting assignments. Member of the Zambia Academy of Sciences. Active on a number of company Boards.
