SECURITY & SAFETY BRIEF FOR NEW STUDENTS

UNZA Security Services department joins the rest of the university community in welcoming new students to UNZA. The department assures students of its commitment to ensuring a safe home for students away from their homes. As the department undertakes to provide a safe and secure environment for students, a certain amount of responsibility is expected from all students if they are to enjoy their stay on campus for the duration of their studies. Remember that Universities are microcosms of society where you find all sorts of happenings, both positive and negative. Negative occurrences include drug abuse, thefts, violence, and abuse. The Security Services department takes a shared approach to crime prevention on campus. This means that students must cooperate with the department in ensuring that the campus is safe and secure for all.

Here are important security tips for new students:

  1. Trusting people you do not really know is a major risk. Look out for confident tricksters who may want to create an impression that they know you and that you can trust them with your belongings or with confidential information about you. They are likely preparing ground to rob you, attack, or defraud you.
  2. Cases of property and money laundering as well as drug abuse occur on campus. They include cases of students or non-students obtaining money or property from students or non-students with a false promise of a favour in return such as a room on campus. As new students are warned of being wary of such, they are also informed that the Security Services do not entertain such vices. You are therefore warned to desist from getting involved in such to ensure the continuation of your studies.
  3. Beware of unscrupulous booksellers on campus or outside. You may buy a book that belongs to UNZA Library which will be detected as stolen with severe consequences on your part.
  4. Be cautious and careful of how you utilise social and other digital media.
  5. Students should make themselves aware of their surroundings and of other people when walking around or outside campus. Avoid poorly lit or isolated areas and where possible, walk with friends or other students.
  6. Do not leave clothes on either drying lines or hanging by the windows and balconies.
    1. Wash your clothes only when you are sure that you will be around to keep an eye on them.
    2. Remove the clothes to safety as soon as they are dry.
  7. Do not, for any reason, leave room keys on top of doors or window seals, toilets, under dustbins or any such places when leaving your room. 
    1. Do not leave keys with people you do not trust.
    2. Do not leave your room unsecured even for a few minutes.
  8. Do not advertise your absence/whereabouts by leaving stickers or posters on your doors.
  9. Do not employ people from outside the university to do your laundry, cooking, room-cleaning etc. Employing children below the age of 18 in particular violates not only university rules but also national law from which you risk being imprisoned.
  10. Do not keep large sums of money in your room or locker.
  11. Do not entertain visitors without your room-mates’ consent.
  12. Do not leave windows open when you go to bed.
  13. Do not leave your property exposed.
  14. Sub-letting of a study room is a punishable offence. Only the office of the dean of students is authorised to allocate bed space at the University. Therefore, do not pay money to anybody for a bed space.
  15. Report all suspicious looking characters and all security indecencies to Security offices.
    1. Request for UNZA staff identity or Job Cards from persons who may want to work in your room.

Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Student Handbook(also called the Yellow Book) which contains the rules and regulations of being a student at the University of Zambia. It is available at the office of the dean.
