CI Directors Meet H.E. Dr.Kaunda on the 68 Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China
On 28th September 2017, the grand reception of marking the 68th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China was held in Chinese Embassy . The directors and several teachers of Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia were invited to attend.
In this grand event, the acting Director of the CI Dr. Sande and the Chinese director Prof. Li Qingjun gained an opportunity to report the development of CI to the first president Dr. Kenneth Kaunda H.E. Dr. Kaunda is also the founder of the University of Zambia. He was deeply interested in education, especially the current scholarship between Zambia and China. After the report by two directors, he highly praised the contributions we made on China-Zambia relationships and encouraged us to make greater achievements through joint effort.

Chinese Bridge- Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students
CI-UNZA Hosts Chinese Bridge
Last week Friday July 7, 2017 the Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia (CI-UNZA) held the Chinese Bridge competition for Foreign Secondary School Students.
The competition had 10 promising Zambian- Secondary school Chinese students displaying their mastery of the Chinese language and culture.
The aim of the competition is to ignite the passion and interest of young Zambian Secondary School students in learning Chinese and in better understanding Chinese Language and Culture.
Schools that participated in the competition included Masaiti Boarding Secondary School, Sesheke Secondary School, Nyumba Yanga Secondary School, Kalonga Secondary School, Kabompo Secondary School and Chipata Day Secondary School.
The top 3 spots were awarded to Patricia Phiri (1st place) from Nyumba Yanga Secondary School, Musonda Lusale (2nd place) from Chipata Day Secondary School and Kabo Mulenga (3rd place). While the remaining participants were awarded consolation prizes.
Since its initiation in 2008, the competition is well known for its cultural and educational exchanges worldwide and has been held 9 times. Witnessing over 900 contestants representing more than 50 countries and over 20,000 students participating in the preliminary competitions in their own countries.
Awarding of the prizes is based on the student’s Chinese language proficiency, knowledge about China, Chinese Culture talents and comprehensive learning abilities.
The 1st place finalist will represent Zambia at the Chinese Bridge - Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School students final in China.
2017 CONFERENCE OF CONFUCIUS INSTITUTES IN AFRICA COMES TO A CLOSE
May 19 marked the end of the 2017 Joint Conference of Confucius institutes in Africa.
The two day conference themed: Vocational and technical training by Confucius Institutes, cooperation between Confucius institutes and Chinese-funded agencies and local teacher training had more than 260 international delegates participating in the conference.
The participating delegates were divided into three clinic sessions of which each deliberated on the theme of the conference. The deliberations highlighted various problems faced by Confucius institutes in Africa as well as proposed solutions to these problems.
In his last remarks to the delegates, Deputy Director General of the Confucius institute Headquarters, Xia Jianhui noted that Hanban took note of the many problems faced by CIs in Africa and would look at implementing the solutions to these problems.
“It should be noted that all CIs in Africa have different problems of which we now need to implement solutions to. This will however involve a lot of factors and will be a long process requiring all parties to come on board and accomplish this goal,” Xia said.
Xia further appreciated all the delegates that participated in the conference. He noted that their contributions and ideas reflected the headquarters pre-conference plans which boosted Hanbans confidence for CI business in Africa.
